We never forget our first love. They leave an indelible mark on our hearts. One of my fondest middle school romance memories takes me back to Las Cruces, NM, where I met my first young love, a charmingly adorable Latino boy.
One night, we cuddled under a pile of blankets and watched Edward Scissorhands, a romantic dark fantasy film directed by bizarre genius, Tim Burton. It was the first time I recall enjoying a love story (perhaps the make-out session helped). I adored this extraordinarily odd tale, and fell in love with the whimsical score Elfman wove around it. That moment forever cemented my fondness for all things Elfman and Burton.
I fell pretty hard for the boy, too. But, we moved far away shortly after. To his credit, he wrote me love letters for well over a year. I have them still…
In the spirit of Danny Elfman, one of my favorite and most distinctive film composers, I’m hosting a delightfully strange writing adventure in collaboration with Colossal Trailer Music, where YOU, dear readers, will have the chance to be immortalized as a quirky character in our bizarre, but heartwarming, love story.

Elfman has done so many scores. I’m going to go way back and say his score for Batman Returns. (Followed by Tales from the Crypt: Demon Knight!)

I had one of those…but more innocent. We were 10 and he moved away. Guaranteed if he stayed close by, we would have become something. My life would have ended up much, much different.

I really loved Big Fish, way back in 2002 or 3… Oddly strange and surreal, just how I like my movies! And Edward Scissorhands has a special place in my heart x

I like Danny Elfman’s Spiderman theme which I enjoyed much more than that of the usually great composer James Horner. Loved your reflection of your first love here. I, too, talked of first love … but that of Steve Rogers for Peggy Carter as I wrote what I fear will be the true ending of CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR. I even have a matching video of it to echo my story. 🙂 Come check it out.

My husband used to write me letters when we were dating. I still have them. Love letters are probably a thing of the past in our digital age.

Edward Scissorhands was a cute movie, but I wasn’t making out with a cute boy when I watched it. I watched it with my kids. 🙂
I love that you’ve held onto those letters. Me, too. I have every letter my husband wrote me when he was in the Army. We weren’t married very long when he went to Vietnam, so those letters are pretty precious to me.

Your young love story sounds like something that might have happened to my sister. My letter writing probably might go one for 2 or 3 exchanges but I’d usually stop kind of quick. So much easier today with email or what have you.
Elfman? I always liked when he was with Oingo Boingo. They put out some pretty neat albums.

Such great memories. I too have saved so many different letters from my past. Both the pen-pals from overseas, and those I received from women in my youth. Edward Scissorhands was such a cool film.
My favourite Danny Elfman score, Mars Attacks. It’s bizarre and funny, just like me.
